Blue Skies Smoothie

Snacking doesn’t always have to derail your fitness results. Sometimes sugary foods can have an adverse effect on your metabolism and fat loss journey, but there are ways to make your snacks and meals less sugary, or even have less processed sugar. This recipe uses all-natural sugars and fats, and includes protein from TRU’s plant-based collection of supplements.

To stay on track with a whole foods diet this summer, here is a smoothie with tons of nutrients. We hope you enjoy this on sunny days by the pool! If you haven’t already, join the Summer Shape-Up Challenge to get bikini ready and FEEL your best during outdoor sun drenched activities in the months ahead.

We used TRU Coconut Macaron Protein to add islandy flavor to this recipe, but we also recommend Vanilla or any mellow flavor that fits well with pineapple. Have fun and get playful!

The coconut water in this smoothie bowl provides electrolytes, perfect for being outside in toasty climates. Don’t forget to stay hydrated this summer! We also used blue spirulina, which gives this smoothie nutrient dense, anti-inflammatory properties.

Health benefits of blue spirulina:

  • Blue spirulina is an algae found in freshwater and saltwater. This anti-inflammatory superfood contains tons of health benefits, which is why the ancient Aztecs have been utilizing its healing properties for hundreds of years.
  • It contains antioxidants, 4g of protein per tbsp, copper, omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids and it provides all of the essential amino acids that our bodies need!
  • It’s been shown to increase muscle endurance and strength.
  • Taking spirulina everyday has also been shown in studies to reduce blood pressure because of the production of nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels.
  • Adding blue spirulina to a smoothie, salad or even a coffee or matcha drink increases its health benefits and brings so many natural healing properties, straight from mama Earth’s most valuable resource; water!
