Vitamin A

Let’s start at the beginning of the alphabet with vitamin A. This micronutrient is involved in a number of health functions including (1):

Vitamin A plays a role in cellular function as well as standard maintenance of the heart, lungs, kidneys, and other critical organs.

Furthermore, a deficiency of vitamin C may cause scurvy, fatigue, and other issues (4).

One possible benefit of vitamin C is prevention of diabetes. A 2008 study looked at 21,831 individuals over a twelve year period.  A strong inverse association was found between plasma vitamin C and the risk of diabetes (5).

Another study found that low vitamin C levels may also have an increased risk of mortality from cancer and cardiovascular disease (6). 

Ensuring you have a proper vitamin C balance can pay dividends towards sustainable long-term health.

Manganese

Managense is known as a trace mineral, meaning that the body only needs small amounts compared to other micronutrients. 

One of the biggest benefits of manganese is bone health. A 2004 study looked at 334 postmenopausal women who took manganese in conjunction with other vitamins. They found back and joint pain decreased. Bone density also improved to a strong extent (7).

Manganese may help treat certain health disorders such as epileptic seizures. One study found that low blood manganese was associated with epilepsy in humans and animals. Supplementation of manganese helped to decrease the risk of seizures (8).

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin that is required for red blood cell formation, neurological function, and DNA synthesis (9). 

A cross-sectional study was performed on 303 senior citizens. Those who had a vitamin B12 deficiency experienced more bodily pain, cognitive impairment and poor overall health (10). 

Signs of vitamin B12 deficiency include (11):

  • Anemia
  • Fatigue, weakness
  • Nerve damage 
  • Memory loss
  • Dementia
  • Depression
  • Seizures 

Preventing vitamin B12 deficiency is important to overall health. Supplementation can help you get there.

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)

MSM is a chemical found in green plants, animals, and humans (12). It most commonly is used to relieve joint pain, reduce inflammation, and boost immunity. 

A 2015 double-blind, controlled study was performed over a 12 week period. One hundred participants had some form of joint degeneration. After supplementing with MSM during this time period, positive effects were realized relating to joint function, joint pain, joint swelling, and overall quality of life (13). 

MSM also may have recovery benefits as well. A 2013 study on twenty-four fit men took 3g of MSM for a 14 day period. The results showed an alleviation of discomfort/pain following stressful exercise sessions (14).

MSM can be a useful supplement when it comes to overall health and recovery.

Spectra ORAC

As a plant based, scientifically validated formula of fruits, vegetables, and herbs, Spectra ORAC was designed to inhibit free radical production while optimizing cellular metabolic health (15).

A double-blind, placebo-controlled study looked at twenty-two human participants who took SPECTRA. They found the supplement to be useful for oxidative stress, inflammatory response, blood glucose levels, and supporting optimal health (16).

Another benefit of L-carnitine is brain function. A study looked at fifty-five patients with impaired performance on neurological tasks. After taking the supplement they accelerated their performance and recovery in various cognitive areas (19). 

L-carnitine as part of a regular supplementation can be a valuable tool to your health and wellness.

R-ALA

R-ALA or R-Alpha-lipoic acid is an antioxidant commonly used to treat diabetes and nerve-related symptoms of diabetes (20). It can help prevent cellular damage and also protect the brain under conditions of damage or injury.

One other benefit of R-ALA is the treatment of obesity. Over the course of twelve clinical trials, they found that ALA supplementation significantly reduced body weight and BMI compared to placebo groups (21).

Furthermore, R-ALA may be used to help control blood sugar levels in humans and animals (22). Researchers believe R-ALA helps to aid in blood sugar control and be a possible alternative form of diabetes treatment.

Turmeric

Turmeric is a spice containing compounds with medicinal properties known as curcuminoids. One of the benefits of turmeric is it’s natural anti-inflammatory properties. 

A systematic review of scientific literature over a four decade period found that turmeric demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity through the inhibition of a number of different molecules that play a role in inflammation (23).

Turmeric also has also been shown to improve brain function through the boosting of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a growth hormone in the brain. This can help to potentially decrease depressive disorders and lower the risk of depression (24).

The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of turmeric prove it to be a potent supplement for possibly treating depression and arthritis.
